Tunisian ship alleged to be fishing illegally in Maltese waters.

The captain of a Tunisian fishing vessel was arrested on suspicion of fishing illegally in Maltese territorial waters.

On Sunday evening, Valletta Police together with the Department of Fisheries and
Aquaculture as well as with the Armed Forces of Malta, inspected a Tunisian fishing vessel which had just docked at Xatt il-Barrieri after the vessel was allegedly involved in fishing illegal in Maltese territorial waters.

This morning, the vessel was taken to the Marsa Landing Facility where after investigations by the Environmental Protection Unit (EPU) of the Police, it turned out that the vessel did not have licenses for fishing in Malta’s territorial waters.

The Captain, a 29-year-old Tunisian, was arrested by the Police while the Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture confiscated around 500 kilograms of fish and fishing equipment.
