Sri Lanka’s president and PM to resign after thousands of protesters storm their homes

The president and prime minister have resigned as thousands of protesters stormed the president’s home as the Sri Lanka faces its worst financial crisis.

On Saturday evening Gotabaya Rajapaksa, the president, who was under intense pressure to quit, told the country’s speaker that he would step down on Wednesday.

Ranil Wickremesinghe announced he was quitting after his home was set on fire by protesters.
