The document Bilingual Glossary of Mathematical Terms launched for consultation

The Bilingual Mathematics Glossary of Mathematics, launched for consultation, aims to provide words and expressions that can be used as part of bilingual mathematics communication in the early and primary stages of education. (ages 3 to 11).

The background for the launch of this glossary is that in Malta the academic language of mathematics has long been in English, with all written texts, including books, written work in classrooms on the subject. whiteboards, student notes and worksheets are all in English. However, research shows that educators switch between Maltese and English during their interaction with students in the classroom and this means that it is common practice to use two languages in teaching mathematics.

The document therefore provides words and expressions that can be used as part of bilingual mathematics communication in the early and primary education stages.

“This is another process from a series being carried out by the Ministry of Education to constantly improve teaching in our schools, as we have done in recent months when we launched various strategies in various sectors in the field of education,” said the -Minister for Education, Sport, Youth, Research and Innovation Clifton Grima. “Education is a living thing that continues to grow and evolve and change with the times, and this document is part of this process.”
