Boris Johnson resigns as Conservative Party leader

Boris Johnson has just announced that he is resigning as leader of the Conservative Party but will remain PM until a new prime minister is appointed.

In his resignation speech he said he was sorry he could not continue to carry out what he had been elected to do.

He did lay the blame for his departure on what he described the “herd mentality” in parliament, saying the “herd movement is powerful and when the herd moves, it moves”.
