UEFA Nations League: Malta in narrow but deserved win over San Marino

Malta keep San Marino at bay

A second half goal by Zachary Muscat gave Malta a 1-0 win over San Marino in their UEFA Nations League Group D encounter.

It was a deserved win for Malta who had the lions share of possession throughout the game but struggled to break down a stubborn San Marino defence.

Malta had chances, Camenzuli, Mbong and Theuma going close but not able to find the net.

Five minutes into the second the Malta got the vital breakthrough when Muscat timed his run perfectly to head home Camenzuli’s cross.

San Marino’s keeper Benedittini did well to keep out Mbong’s close range effort.

Luke Montebello thought he had doubled Malta’s lead but VAR ruled him offside.

As full time approached Malta nearly came unstuck again, as they did against Estonia, when substitute Vitaioli, unmarked in the box, fired over the bar.

A narrow but precious win which keeps alive Malta’s hope of winning their group. To do that they have to go to Estonia and win by a two goal margin. Not an easy task.
