The largest transport grants package has been launched

With a total of around €20 million, Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Capital Projects Ian Borg, together with Parliamentary Secretary for European Funds Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi, launched the largest package of transport financial grants in the form of schemes in favour of both the environment and sustainable transport which will be available to the general public in 2022. This was done in collaboration with Transport Malta which falls under the remit of the Ministry for Transport, Infrastructure and Capital Projects.

“For another consecutive year we are once again assisting with more financial incentives Maltese families to make use of more sustainable and efficient means of transport. These grants are a demonstration of an environmentally friendly government who is committed to continue making a difference in order to achieve our main goal of working diligently on the subject of alternative transport. Through this investment we will continue to help people make the transition to electric mobility in the most natural and with the least impact possible. We will therefore continue to work to reduce emissions and continue promoting the use of electric vehicles in both the private and commercial sectors”, said Minister Ian Borg.

Parliamentary Secretary for European Funds Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi explained that these grants are being funded by European funds through the Recovery and Resilience Plan in order to encourage the public and the private sector to invest in cars powered by electricity. The plan is to invest €50 million over three years by the end of 2024.

Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi said that one of the main objectives of this investment is to reduce emissions from the traffic system and thus improve the quality of life of people, with cleaner air.

Transport Malta Chairman Joseph Bugeja mentioned that these grants, which are increasing in amount every year, will continue to help both families and individuals who choose to switch to less polluting vehicles. He said that year after year, people’s demands are being heard and this can be witnessed in the increase in the amount of both grants and sums from last year to this year.
