The construction industry must undergo a transformation to remain sustainable

Prime Minister Robert Abela holds pre budget talks with the Malta Developers Association

As the Budget for next year is presented in less than two weeks, the government has continued with further consultation meetings with key partners. At a meeting on Wednesday afternoon, Prime Minister Robert Abela met with the Malta Developers Association.

Speaking at the beginning of the meeting, Dr Abela said that the construction sector should be one, but not the only, economic engine of our country.

The government has further strengthened this industry with strategic decisions on important measures, particularly during the pandemic where more Maltese became homeowners.

But, at the same time, the construction sector needs to undergo a transformation to remain sustainable.

Here, Prime Minister Abela referred to reducing the country’s emissions and environmental targets to achieve carbon neutrality. It is therefore necessary, among other things, to make the necessary investment by all developers, large and small, to change the machinery. “We have already introduced schemes to help this investment be made and we will continue to do so,” said the Prime Minister.

President of the Malta Developers Association Sandro Chetcuti said that the timely measures taken by the government during the pandemic led to no one being negatively impacted during the move.

He mentioned that in recent years the government has implemented 28 proposals submitted by the association, including strong initiatives for first-time and second-time buyers.

Sandro Chetcuti expressed the association’s commitment to, with prudence, improve the operation of the industry to continue to contribute to the economic and environmental goals facing our country.

This meeting was also attended by the Minister for Finance and Labor Clyde Caruana, the Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Capital Projects Ian Borg and the Parliamentary Secretary for Construction Chris Agius.
