UK health minister quits over Covid breach

Health and Social Care Secretary Matt Hancock leaves Downing Street, London.

Matt Hancock has resigned as health secretary after he broke social distancing guidance by kissing a colleague.

Mr Hancock has been under increasing pressure to resign after the Sun newspaper published images of Mr Hancock and Gina Coladangelo kissing. The newspaper said they had been taken inside the Department of Health on 6 May. He had given her a job as a non-executive director of the Department of Health. She and Mr Hancock have been friends since university.

It is reported that Mr Hancock has now left his wife of 15 years.

There was little apparent support from Conservative MP’s for Mr Hancock with Labour MP’s also caliing for his resignation.

Sir Keir Starmer, Labour leader and SNP’s Westminster leader Ian Blackford slammed Prime Minister Boris Johnson for not sacking Mr Hancock before he resigned.

Former Chancellor Sajid Javid has been appointed Health Secretary.
