Hamrun and Hibs maintain top places

Hamrun Spartans and Hibernians maintained their top places in the BOV Premier League with wins on Sunday.

Hamrun had to overcome a late scare before edging past Balzan.

The Spartans were two up inside the opening half hour through Franklin Sasere after just four minutes and Joseph Mbong before the clock had reached thirty minutes.

It was not all plain sailing for Hamrun with Uros Ljubomirac almost catching keeper Manual Bartolo off his line.

Aleksa Andrejic pulled one back for Balzan minutes after restart and an upset looked on the cards when Alfred Effiong fired Balzan level.

Hamrun clinched the win with a late Seydou Doumbia strike to go back to the top of the premiership.

Two early first half goals put Hibs in charge as they dominated possession and quickly snuffed out any threat from Lija.

Fonseca set Hibs on their way with a simple tap-in just before the quarter hour mark.

Gilmar thought he had doubled the score but his effort was ruled offside.

The second came shortly afterwards when from a Gilmar corner,  Degabriele fed Apap to head home for Hibs.

Jake Grech had a golden chance to add a third after being sent through by Agius but with only the keeper to beat he squandered the opportunity.

Immediately after the start of the second half, Hibs launched a goal blitz.

Jurgen Degabriele raced down the left and picked out Fonseca in the box who made it 3-0.

Minutes late it was the turn of Jake Grech to break through the Lija defence and this time he made no mistake. Hibs 4-0  up  but not finished yet.

Jurgen Degabriele, who was voted Man of the Match, wrapped up a fine solo effort and wrapped up the game to put Hibs 5 up and out of sight.
