€ 3 million for communities

Minister for Home Affairs, National Security and Law Enforcement Byron Camilleri and Minister for National Heritage, the Arts and Local Government José Herrera announce new agreement between the Local Enforcement System Agency (LESA) and the Local Councils Association (AKL) - LESA Administrative Building, 246, Triq Mater Boni Consili, Fgura - 18-1-21

In the first of a series of initiatives with the theme ‘Government for the People’ in Fgura, it was announced that the Ministry of Interior, National Security and Law Enforcement will allocate € 3 million from the funds of enforcement in community projects.

These funds for the localities will be passed on to local councils around Malta and Gozo and they can obtain them by proposing projects for the benefit of the residents.

Details of the agreement were announced by Interior, National Security and Law Enforcement Minister Byron Camilleri and National Heritage, Arts and Local Government Minister José Herrera at a press conference.

“When we say that security is at the heart of our work, we believe it with the facts. To be truly secure, we must also live in a more organized and disciplined society. But there are also various initiatives that we can take and therefore we are ensuring that LESA invests back what it brings from the people, ”explained Minister Camilleri. He urged local councils to present sustainable projects that improve the lives of their communities.

“This is an important agreement because it will provide more funding for local governments. It is good that these projects are as close as possible to the environmental and cultural aspect of the neighbourhood. This is also in line with the vision of local government policy reform, “said Minister Herrera. The agreement between the Local Enforcement Agency (LESA) and the Association of Local Councils (AKL) will provide for an investment of one million euros per year. Projects being encouraged are those through which local councils improve the local environment, offer clean or alternative transport, modern infrastructure, investment in surveillance and security and heritage-protecting projects.
