G20: Calls for worldwide coordinated response to COVID-19 pandemic

World leaders at the first virtual G20 summit, held in Saudi Arabia, have called for Covid-19 vaccines for all countries.

EU Commission president Ursula Von der Leyen  called on G20 Leaders to pledge $4.5 billion for the ACT-Accelerator “by the end of the year”.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel, however, said on Sunday she was “worried” about the slow pace of the discussions aiming to provide a COVID-19 vaccine to the poorest nations.

Russian president Vladimir Putin supported the G20 decision to provide vaccines for everyone.

Talks also focused on climate change and environmental protection which received strong backing except for US President Donald Trump who defended his withdrawal from the treaty, saying “it was not designed to save the environment”, but to “kill the American economy”. That decision could be rescinded when president-elect Joe Biden is sworn-in next January.
