USA’s goalkeeper Hope Solo had some strong words after her team were eliminated from the women’s football.
Solo said they were knocked out by a “bunch of cowards” after losing to Sweden on penalties in the quarter-final.
It is the first time the defending champions have failed to reach the semi-finals of a major tournament.
“The best team did not win today,” said Solo.
Solo tried to un-nerve the Swedish keeper by calling for a time-out to change her gloves just moments before the decisive penalty. A ploy that worked against Germany in the World Cup. Here in Brazil it did not and Sweden claimed the scalp of the favourites.
