Investment to continue improving level of infrastructure in Luqa

Minister for Local Government and Public Works, Alison Zerafa Civelli

The Public Works Department has completed extensive infrastructural works being carried out on four roads in Luqa, as part of an investment of approximately €420,000 to continue improving the infrastructure of this locality.

The works, which began in May of this year, were carried out on Experimental Field Road, Great Valley Road, Farming Road and St. Vincent de Paul Street, and included interventions on various elements of the existing infrastructure.

The Minister for Local Government and Public Works, Alison Zerafa Civelli, together with the Director General of the Community Projects Division within the Department of Public Works, Architect Nadia Gatt, and the Mayor of Luqa, John Schembri, visited the works being carried out on these four roads.

Minister Alison Zerafa Civelli said that the investment being made in Luqa is a concrete example of the Government’s work to transform community priorities into works that make a difference in the daily lives of residents. “Since the beginning of this legislature we have made a clear commitment to continue to increase investment in our communities and to give Local Councils more tools to address the needs of their localities. Today we are seeing the result of this commitment in practice, through direct investment in the infrastructure that the community uses every day,” said the Minister.

She also recalled that the Government announced an increase in direct investment in communities, from €10 million to €12.8 million over a two-year period, as part of its commitment to continue strengthening collaboration with Local Councils and leading to more infrastructural projects across Malta.

The Director General of the Community Projects Division within the Department of Public Works, Architect Nadia Gatt, explained that the interventions in these four roads were aimed at addressing various aspects of the existing infrastructure through coordinated and comprehensive work. She stressed the importance of infrastructural works being designed to address the concrete needs of the area, while improving the safety, accessibility and functionality of spaces used daily by the community.

The Mayor of Luqa, John Schembri, thanked the Ministry for Local Government and Public Works and the Department of Public Works for the work and collaboration that led to these infrastructural interventions being carried out in the locality. He stressed the importance of the continued collaboration between the Local Council and the Department in order to address the needs of the community and carry out further interventions that improve the infrastructure and the quality of life of residents.

The interventions carried out on these roads include the construction of new pavements and kerbs, improvements to drainage and rainwater systems, works on stone walls as well as tarmac works. These interventions affect in particular the pavements, roadsides, drainage systems and accesses to properties.

These interventions have improved the safety and accessibility of sidewalks and accesses, while improvements to the drainage and rainwater systems should help in better management of rainwater. At the same time, infrastructural work in Luqa will continue, as there are other interventions planned both in the Ħal Farruġ area and in other areas of the locality.

The intervention on these four roads represents a coordinated effort to address various infrastructural needs in the same area, with an emphasis on improving the safety, accessibility and functionality of the infrastructure for the community.
