Prime Minister Robert Abela stated that Budget 2027 will be another Budget that gives a clear sense of direction and peace of mind, not only to those who are investing in our country, but above all to workers, who will continue to see their situation improve and their protection strengthened.
The Prime Minister said this during a consultative meeting with representatives of the General Workers’ Union at the GWU building in Valletta, as part of the consultation process in preparation for Budget 2027.
Dr Abela noted that our country is operating in an international context characterised by uncertainty and significant challenges. He referred to the international discussion taking place on these realities, including in the United Nations General Assembly, as well as to the pressures linked to international energy prices.
Despite this international context, Prime Minister Abela stated that Malta will continue to offer certainty and peace of mind to businesses, which are continuing to invest in our country and create job opportunities, including quality jobs for Maltese and Gozitan workers.
He said that this is a sentiment that is being felt in various sectors of the economy and stressed that job creation was, and will remain, a top priority for the Government.
The Prime Minister explained that a strong labour market also creates the conditions for further progress in the quality of jobs and in the conditions of workers. He mentioned among others collective agreements, better wages and more opportunities for workers to advance in their skills and careers. Dr Abela said that this can be done because our country has an economy and a labour market that is bearing fruit.
He referred to the Government’s continued support with regard to energy prices. Dr Abela stated that this is leading to the continued assurance of stability for families and businesses and is helping to avoid unwanted effects on the Maltese economy.
The Prime Minister stressed that, in the face of an international reality that remains unpredictable, the Government will continue to be a source of stability and certainty.
Dr Abela concluded by thanking the General Workers’ Union for the proposals submitted in preparation for Budget 2027, as well as for the work it carries out daily in favour of the protection of workers.
Also present at the meeting were Deputy Prime Minister Ian Borg, Ministers Silvio Schembri, Miriam Dalli, Clyde Caruana, Jonathan Attard, Chris Bonett, Jo Etienne Abela and Keith Azzopardi Tanti, along with Parliamentary Secretary Alicia Bugeja Said, Deputy Anthony Agius Decelis and the Head of the Secretariat of the Office of the Prime Minister Mark Mallia.
