Three roads in Ħamrun are being given a new face through an investment of almost half a million euros, which will improve both the underground infrastructure and the quality and appearance of the roads.
The works being carried out by the Public Works Department, and covering Atocia Street, Duke of Edinburgh Street and a passage in St Francis Street, include the removal of the existing pavement, excavation works, the replacement of the main and water house connections, the construction of a new reinforced concrete base, as well as the laying of a new, higher quality and more resistant pavement to better withstand daily use.
This was announced during a visit to the work site by the Minister for Local Government and Public Works, Alison Zerafa Civelli, together with the Director General of the Community Projects Division within the Department of Public Works, Architect Nadia Gatt, and the Mayor of Ħamrun, Christian Sammut.
Minister Alison Zerafa Civelli said that this investment is part of the Government’s ongoing commitment to continue improving local infrastructure across the country. She explained that projects such as these not only give roads a more beautiful appearance, but also strengthen essential underground services and offer a safer and more accessible environment for residents and all those who use these roads.
“Our communities deserve quality infrastructure that makes a difference in their daily lives. That is why we are continuing to work hand in hand with local councils to carry out projects that not only beautify our localities, but also strengthen essential services and offer safer and more accessible roads for residents”, concluded the Minister.
Director General Nadia Gatt Curmi said that the works are being carried out according to the highest technical standards, with an emphasis on the quality and durability of the infrastructure. She added that the interventions are designed to ensure more resilient roads and more reliable underground services for the benefit of residents.
The Mayor of Ħamrun, Christian Sammut, thanked the Ministry for Local Government and Public Works and Public Works for their continued collaboration and support in making these works possible. He said that interventions of this kind are of great importance to the Ħamrun community, as they are not only improving the road infrastructure, but are also giving new life to historic areas of the locality.
One of the most significant parts of this project is the regeneration of Triq Atoċja, considered the oldest and most historic part of Ħamrun. Through this intervention, not only will the road infrastructure be improved, but the historical and cultural character of this area will continue to be strengthened, so that it can be better enjoyed by both residents. As part of the works, an intervention will also be carried out on the parapet of the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Atoċja
Works on Duke of Edinburgh Street are progressing well. Following the completion of the removal of the existing pavement, excavation works, replacement of water services and construction of the reinforced concrete base, the laying of the new pavement is currently underway.
The project, which began in April 2026 and is expected to be completed in October 2026, is being carried out over an area of approximately 1,200 square metres and will continue to improve both underground services and the quality of infrastructure in this part of Ħamrun.
