Enemalta’s engineers and technical crews are currently deployed to restore electricity supply to customers affected by cable faults in Birkirkara, Balzan and Iklin.
The localities experienced four separate cable faults that were unrelated incidents occurring on different cables and repair works commenced immediately.
It is worth noting that the company is in the midst of an extensive, multi-year investment programme to strengthen and future-proof the distribution network. As part of this programme, reinforcement works are also planned in Birkirkara, Balzan and Iklin to
further strengthen the locality’s electricity distribution network and support increasing demand. While significant upgrades have already been completed, work is still ongoing to further enhance the network’s resilience and capacity to meet growing electricity
demand.
Currently, to minimise disruption and restore electricity to affected customers as quickly as possible, Enemalta is deploying mobile generators to the affected substations.
Once the cable faults have been repaired, the affected substations will be reconnected to the electricity grid and the temporary generators removed.
Malta is currently experiencing exceptionally high temperatures as part of an intense heatwave, resulting in record levels of electricity demand. Electricity demand today is expected to exceed the previous all-time peak of 663MW recorded in 2023.
The current power interruptions are the result of faults on the electricity distribution network, and electricity generation capacity remains sufficient to meet current demand.
The company remains fully focused on restoring electricity supply to all affected customers as quickly and safely as possible.
