Minister for Gozo and Planning Clint Camilleri announced that the Ministry has joined forces with the MFA and the GFA to host the BOV Challenge Cup semi-finals for the first time on 25th and 26th April in Gozo.
Minister Camilleri explained that “The Ministry’s aim in this collaboration is to continue to extend opportunities and competitions for Gozitan teams. It is also a showcase for Gozitan players who also compete with Maltese teams and at the same time an occasion like this serves as an additional spectacle for all local football enthusiasts.”
He congratulated all the teams that participated in this competition, especially the teams participating in these semi-finals that will be played in Gozo on the 25th and 26th of April, and encouraged all Gozitan and Maltese football fans to come to the Gozo Stadium with all their might and create a wonderful atmosphere.
This season, also thanks to this collaboration, the Gozitan teams that compete in the First Division of the Gozitan Championship made their debut in this tournament. The 7 Gozitan teams joined the 16 teams that make up the Challenge League. So far this tournament has been very balanced, offering beautiful and hard-fought games, so now in the semi-finals that will both be played at the Gozo Stadium, two Gozitan teams and two Maltese teams have qualified.
Minister Clint Camilleri thanked the MFA who are the organisers of this tournament and who put forward the proposal to integrate Gozitan teams into the Challenge Cup, as well as the GFA which has always been a strong supporter whenever there has been collaboration on games and competitions at the Gozo Stadium. He stated that “All this also against the backdrop that next weekend and the following, we will be hosting games from the Malta Premier League in Gozo, as well as a number of youth friendly games.”
Minister Camilleri also spoke about the work being done in relation to sports tourism and reminded of two important marathons that will be held in the coming weeks; the Ġirja t’Gozo which is a historic marathon attended by hundreds of foreigners and Maltese, and the X TERRA World Championship which will also be hosted in Gozo. He also thanked the organisers of these competitions who continue to serve as an ambassador for Gozo in promoting the island in the sports tourism niche.
