Prime Minister Robert Abela officially recognised, on behalf of Malta, Palestine as a state during the 80th United Nations General Assembly in New York, which has the theme ‘United for Better: 80 years and more for Peace, Human Rights and Development’.
This historic decision sees Malta joining several other countries that believe that the creation of the Palestinian State should be a foundation for achieving lasting peace in the Middle East. In his speech during the conference on the two-state solution, the Maltese Prime Minister reiterated that the hunger and fighting in Gaza must end, while all hostages held after the attack of 7 October 2023 are released. He added that although the path to peace may seem difficult, our country is ready to offer the necessary assistance to restore the lives of those affected.
In addition to Malta, other countries have recognised the Palestinian state, including Belgium, France and Luxembourg, while Australia, Canada, Portugal and the United Kingdom have done so a few hours earlier. Prime Minister Robert Abela also made reference to the humanitarian aid from Malta, namely the delivery of 250 tonnes of flour to be distributed to the Palestinian people.
