A program of activities related to the protection of mental health has been launched

President Myriam Spiteri Debono

For the second consecutive year, a month-long programme of activities is being launched to further raise awareness about mental health care. The launch was attended by Her Excellency Myriam Spiteri Debono, President of Malta, and Minister for Health and Active Ageing Jo Etienne Abela.

This programme of activities, which is being held under the patronage of the President of Malta, aims to continue to reduce the stigma associated with mental health. The programme of activities will include discussion activities, symposia, as well as an art exhibition. The activities will begin tomorrow, September 10, on World Suicide Prevention Day, and will continue until October 10, which marks World Mental Health Day.

Myriam Spiteri Debono, President of Malta, explained how this launch was held under her patronage because the Presidency is convinced of the need for the people to be given information to also take care of their mental health, and to continue to combat stigma.

President Myriam Spiteri Debono reminded that mental health problems can be addressed, and that treatment can lead to recovery, and therefore appealed for those who feel the need to seek help immediately. She therefore encouraged individuals who feel they are developing situations of mental health challenges, to make use of the helpline 1579.

Health Minister Jo Etienne Abela

Health Minister Jo Etienne Abela said that the Government’s strategy is based on protecting mental health in every aspect of society. “For this Government, protecting mental health is a national priority. We believe in one healthcare system and the first step to breaking the stigma is to combine healthcare that includes mental health as well as physical health. This is because patients who are going through physical health challenges often also face mental health challenges,” explained Minister Abela.

“We are committed to continuing to work so that no one is left alone. In this regard, we need the collaboration of every part of society, so that together we can continue to address the challenges related to mental health”, concluded Dr Abela.
