In an address delivered as ‘The International Advanced Endoscopy Masterclass’ is being convened in Malta, Prime Minister Robert Abela reiterated the Maltese Government’s commitment to excellence in the health sector, research and medical education.
The Prime Minister noted that this type of conference of the best professionals in the field of endoscopy has come to our country for the first time and thanks to it, an exchange of ideas is taking place. He noted the role of the Ministry for Health and Active Ageing together with the Malta Tourism Authority in bringing this conference to our country.
He explained the investment that continued to be made in our country so that patients continue to receive quality health services. He noted how our country has introduced what is called endoscopic submucosal dissection. A technique with which endoscopic intervention is more precise and provides the opportunity for minimally invasive treatment. Dr Abela also said that another endoscopy ward has opened at Mater Dei Hospital to provide more services to patients.
Prime Minister Abela said that this medical conference will provide an opportunity for our country to be a centre of excellence in health in the Mediterranean region. He also thanked in particular and among others Professor Edward Despott, a renowned Maltese abroad and who is also providing his services at Mater Dei Hospital. Professor Despott was instrumental in bringing the AEM to our country.
The Minister for Health and Active Ageing Jo Etienne Abela expressed his and the Ministry’s great satisfaction that a congress of this quality and of the highest standard is taking place in our country. He made reference to the expansion of endoscopy services at Mater Dei which in the last year has hired Professor Edward Despott who is offering ESD and double balloon enteroscopy services. This is a level of care that is classified among the best in the world. “With the participation of the Government and in the organisation of this congress, the doctors and nurses who offer services in Malta are benefiting, being trained in the best way so that Maltese and Gozitan citizens receive the highest level of care,” concluded Minister Jo Etienne Abela.
MTA Chief Executive Carlo Micallef said that the Malta Tourism Authority’s strategy is in favour of quality tourism and also serves as part of the Malta 2050 vision. He explained how conferences and expos of the calibre of the AEM Masterclass being held in our country these days provide that added value to our economy.
