National Center of Toxicology inaugurated

The Minister for Health and Active Aging Jo Etienne Abela inaugurated a new toxicology centre. Minister Abela stressed the importance of our country being equipped with a center dedicated to toxicology, as when there is a case of poisoning the person needs immediate and specialized treatment.

The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that in one year, unintentional poisoning causes more than 100,000 deaths in the world. He explained that the National Toxicology Center and its multidisciplinary staff will be offering treatment to patients who need their service, without the need to go to emergency departments in Malta and Gozo. They will also be increasing awareness about the prevention of intoxication.

“Thanks to this Center we are carrying out another electoral measure that protects the health of patients in our country. We are committed to continue working so that this service continues to expand and reach more people,” repeated Minister Abela. The Minister also announced that from today the public can call on the number 1774 in order to be given professional assistance on toxicology.

The Director General of Health Dr Clarence Pace explained how the professionals who will be running this centre, will continue to train and carry out research at the University of Malta. “This Center in our country will be crucial both for professionals working in the health sector and for the public. Committed to seeing this center continue to expand to be a point of reference,” concluded Dr. Pace.
