President Metsola visits President Vella at the Palace in Valletta

The President of the European Parliament visited the President of the Republic of Malta George Vella at the Grand Master’s Palace in Valletta. During his final week in office, President Metsola thanked President Vella for his service to the people of Malta and Gozo, for their conversations and his guidance, and for great cooperation with the European Parliament.
She emphasised the importance of the upcoming European Parliament elections in June, and reiterated her appeal to the people of Malta and Gozo to vote and make their voice heard when choosing the 6 Members of the European Parliament.

President Vella underlined the important role that the European Parliament has in participatory democracy, and the focus placed on the citizens through a number of initiatives. He expressed his hope that through the upcoming elections, EU citizens will get stronger access to, and influence on, EU institutions.

The role that the European Parliament plays in addressing regional developments was discussed, with a particular focus on enlargement and migration.

President Vella thanked President Metsola for her visit and for her cooperation during his Presidency term.

During the visit, President Metsola was also given a tour by Heritage Malta representatives Manuel Magro Conti, main curator at the Palace, and

Raymond Howard, deputy curator, of the recent renovations at the Grandmaster’s Palace. The restoration project was done through EU funds. “This is yet another example how the EU brings about a positive change in our societies, by preserving culture and promoting our heritage,” President Metsola said.
