The Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Animal Rights Anton Refalo inaugurated a system of five boilers that will modernize and improve the efficiency of the Public Slaughterhouse, through an investment of €580,000.

On average, the Slaughterhouse heats around 150 cubic meters of water per day in its various processes. With this new system, maximum cleanliness will also be ensured in the Slaughterhouse plant, while the cost of fuel for heating the water will decrease by approximately 60 percent.

Minister Anton Refalo explained that these boilers respect the environment, while they are also helping to achieve Malta’s goals in the field of climate change, air quality and the goals for -sustainable development (SDGs).

“This investment is another measure that confirms that the Government is committed to continuing to help Maltese farmers and villagers and ensure their future. It is necessary that we continue to invest in the infrastructure of this sector, particularly with the use of technology, and thus also help to strengthen the quality of Maltese agricultural products,” said Minister Refalo.

In the Public Slaughterhouse, an investment was also made in a contingency system by renovating an old boiler in case of need. A vaporizer, a new system of heat exchangers and a fire extinguishing system were also purchased.

For his part, the Director of the Public Slaughterhouse Stefan Cachia said that “this investment will help to strengthen the efficiency of the Slaughterhouse and at the same time we will continue to reduce the environmental impact by reducing the emissions of greenhouse gases up to 50% while we practically bring to nothing the emissions of particulate matter. This will lead to an improvement in the air quality for the workers of the Slaughterhouse, for our customers as well as those who live in the surroundings.”
