Second edition of the Fishing for Recipes competition launched

The second edition of the Fishing for Recipes competition was launched, an initiative that aims to promote the creative cooking of typical Maltese fish, and sustainable consumption among all Maltese and Gozitan families.

The competition, which was launched by the Minister for Education, Sport, Youth, Research and Innovation Clifton Grima and the Parliamentary Secretary for Fisheries, Aquaculture and Animal Rights Alicia Bugeja Said, is open to all students aged between 9 and 15, where they are encouraged to participate and create innovative recipes from the list of local fish provided with the regulations.

Minister Clifton Grima praised this initiative because through it they are showing that the education being given in schools is holistic and goes beyond traditional education.

“This is another initiative where we are educating the students in a different way. Through the competition, the students will do research not only on the subject, but also on the traditions of our country. Education is the main means for our country to keep its traditions and they pass from generation to generation, while this initiative will also serve to show the students the benefits of healthy food and a healthier life,” repeated Minister Grima.

For her part, Parliamentary Secretary Alicia Bugeja Said encouraged those students who are interested in participating to be creative and create dishes and recipes based on traditional fish. “I encourage students to participate in this competition and present their innovative ideas. Through education and public awareness we continue to strengthen sustainability,” stated Parliamentary Secretary Bugeja Said.

For this competition there will be a jury to choose 10 finalists, who will be announced through a specially created page on social media, while the photos of these recipes, as well as the ingredients used will be published on the same page. The 10 finalists will be given the opportunity to prepare their recipe during the Agrifair which will be held next April at the MFCC.

The Fishing For Recipes competition opens on 11 March 2024 and anyone who is interested must fill out the application with the requested details and send it via e-mail to fishingforrecipes.mafa@gov.mt by Friday 5 of April 2024.
