ITS Achieves Remarkable Turnaround: Positive MFHEA Audit Reports Overturn 2015’s Negative Results

The Malta Further & Higher Education Authority (MFHEA) has recently released the Institute
of Tourism Studies (ITS) Programme Audit Report, providing a comprehensive assessment of the Bachelor and Master’s degree level study programmes.

This report stems from the rigorous External Quality Assurance process conducted by an independent peer review panel. The panel thoroughly reviewed the documentation submitted by ITS and conducted an onsite audit visit.

Among the report’s key findings, the MFHEA documentation states, "the panel concluded that the Institute of Tourism Studies meets Section B, C, D, E, F, and G and requires improvement for Section A. In response, ITS has diligently crafted and submitted an Action Plan to address the identified areas in Section A. The recommendations outlined in the report aim to elevate existing standards and promote best practices.

ITS expresses its contentment with the Programme Audit Report, which was published on
November 29, 2023, and the External Quality Audit Report issued on July 14, 2023. Notably, this achievement marks a significant improvement since 2015 when ITS did not meet 7 out of 11 standards. The positive outcome reflects the continuous efforts and robust changes implemented over the past few years.

Since 2015, ITS has achieved several milestones, including the launch of higher-level study
programmes such as Bachelor and Master’s degrees (MQF Level 6 and 7), which were not
previously available. This expansion allows students and professionals in the tourism and
hospitality industry to advance their educational qualifications.

Furthermore, ITS has established fruitful collaborations with esteemed international
institutions and universities, including Institut Lyfe (formerly known as Institut Paul Bocuse), Haaga Helia University of Applied Sciences, The Emirates Academy of Hospitality
Management, DAN Europe, and SUNx Malta. These collaborations have resulted in the
creation of unique study programmes, including the Diploma in Climate Friendly Travel and
the Bachelor of Science in Diving Safety Management, two of a kind globally.

In addition to these accomplishments, ITS has secured agreements with several institutions
interested in offering ITS courses within their universities. This success has led to the establishment of satellite campuses in Jordan, Switzerland, and China, further extending the reach and impact of ITS’s educational initiatives.
