Malta Ġusta: More than 1,000 families to benefit from roof insulation, double glazing scheme

More than 1,000 homes will benefit from this year’s energy efficiency scheme for the retrofitting of roof insulation and double-glazed apertures in their homes.

During the scheme’s announcement, Minister for the Environment, Energy and Enterprise Miriam Dalli said that this year the government is doubling its investment in this scheme to €1 million, to continue supporting more efficient use of energy in homes in Malta and Gozo. The Roof Insulation – Double Glazing (RIDG) Scheme was first issued last year with an allocation of €500,000 and was immediately taken up with 577 applications in just over a month.

The RIDG Scheme, which is administered by the Regulator for Energy and Water Services (REWS), is also open to voluntary organisations that do not have any commercial activities.

The grant funds 50% of the total eligible costs of roof insulation and double-glazed doors and windows, up to a maximum of €1,000, including VAT.  Households and voluntary organisations can apply for both of these thermal insulation solutions at the same time.

Minister Miriam Dalli explained that the 2024 Budget is allocating over €133 million for the energy transition. This allocation will support the extension of several schemes such as the REWS grants for the installation of PV panels, battery systems, heat pumps and solar water heaters, schemes for the restoration of wells and the installation of water purification systems, feed-in tariff schemes for investments in larger renewable energy installations, and many other initiatives.

In 2024, the popular grant for the installation of PV panels and battery systems in family homes will be extended with another €4.8 million. This allocation will provide funding for more than 1,800 families.

“We believe that people are the protagonists of our ecological transition towards climate neutrality. The government’s vision is to provide as much support as possible to help families and businesses in this direction. Year after year, we are strengthening different schemes to make this transition easier for all,” Minister Miriam Dalli said.

REWS Chief Executive Officer Marjohn Abela explained that applications for the Roof Insulation – Double Glazing Scheme will be received between Monday 13th November 2023 and Sunday, 31st December 2023 or until funds are absorbed. Online application forms and scheme guidelines are available at www.rews.org.mt. Prospective applicants may also contact the Government helpline Servizz.Gov on 153 for further assistance.

Suppliers can register their products from today through an email that must be sent to the Regulator at enquiry@rews.org.mt.
