Winning starts for Hamrun, Hibernians and Marsaxlokk

Hamrun Spartans began the defence of their BOV Premier title with a narrow 1-0 win over Balzan. Jonny Roberts with the only goal on the hour mark.

Last season Hibernians failed to reach their normal strong heights but their opening game against Gzira Utd showed promise of a much brighter future.

New signing Giannis Baastianos put them ahead midday through the first half before Ayrton Attard made it 2-0 just before the break. Hibs added a third moments after the second half started when Jurgen Degabriele found the back of the net. The Hibs and Malta international grabbed his second with an hour gone to seal a dominating 4-0 win for Hibernians as they announced their intent for the coming season.

On Friday night, Marsaxlokk cruised to a 5-1 win over newly promoted Naxxar Lions.

In today’s games, Birkirkara face Sliema Wanderers, Santa Lucia play Floriana and Valletta entertain Sirens while Mosta play Gudja Utd in the late game at Ta’Qali.
