Open access to space for the Kalkara community and families as a result of the transfer of a historic building

Prime Minister Robert Abela visited Villa Portelli in Kalkara, a historic building that arose from an idea towards the end of the 18th century and which is currently undergoing restoration work by Heritage Malta so that it can be of community service and be enjoyed from the public.

In a visit that Prime Minister Abela made, the management of Heritage Malta explained how the work being done of restoration and even digitization will help the public to enjoy the villa free of charge, not as simply a museum but an experience is offered on various themes linked to cultural heritage and is also given virtual visibility to the wide historical heritage that our country has under the sea. The garden with the villa, measuring more than four acres, will also be enjoyed by the public in an open green space that it serves as relaxation for the community and also a space where educational activities are carried out for families.

The Prime Minister said this work is being done as a result of the decision of the Cabinet, that Villa Portelli passes in the hands of Heritage Malta, as an important one so that the heritage of our country is not only protected but also enjoyed from families and offers an educational experience in a beautiful environment. He said that the community aspect that will be forgotten in this building will be an important one.

“This restoration project entrusted to the guardian of the cultural heritage is also part of other changes at a community level that we want to continue to do by keeping historic and public buildings open for families,” pointed out Prime Minister  Abela”.

In the background that it previously passed to the Government with the closure of the British military base in 1979 this villa was the residence of the Admiral, Heritage Malta is also expected to offer visitors an experience where they have the opportunity to follow restoration of traditional boats. This is a project that will be worked on with MCAST students. This apart from initiatives by Heritage Malta planned for this villa such as explanations to visitors on the effects of the changes in the climate on historical heritage. In fact, the restoration work that is currently being done and which amounts to €3 million is addressing also damage that Villa Portelli suffered due to the storm Helios, which hit the Maltese islands last February.

Accompanying Prime Minister Abela in the visit was also the Minister for National Heritage, Arts and the Local Government Owen Bonnici and the Mayor of Kalkara Wayne Aquilina.
