An elderly woman was taken to Mater Dei Hospital after getting into difficulties while swimming in Marsascala, police said.
The 79-year-old woman, from Marsascala, had been swimming in the area known as Fajtata Bay.
A Civil Protection crew and a medical team were called to the scene before the woman was taken to hospital where her condition was described as serious.
The incident happened at 7pm on Thursday evening.
