Continuous work in the socio-cultural field of our country

The Parliamentary Secretary for Local Government Alison Zerafa Civelli together with the Mġarr Local Council announced the activity of ‘Strawberry Festival 2023’ which celebrates the strawberry fruit that is grown in the fields of the picturesque village of Mġarr and surrounding.

This party will take place on Sunday 16 April, between ten in the morning and five in the afternoon, around the locality of Mġarr itself. This activity is organized every year by the Mġarr Local Council, with this year being the 14th edition. This party has been held every year since 2007, apart from two consecutive years due to the pandemic.

Parliamentary Secretary Zerafa Civelli praised the Mġarr Local Council for its work so that year after year they continue to organize this socio-cultural activity that attracts both residents and local tourists. “The role of the Local Council is not to take care of cleanliness in the locality or to do maintenance in open spaces only, therefore it is gratifying to see Local Councils supporting different elements from our culture and society, such as a product Maltese agricultural,” emphasized the Parliamentary Secretary.

“The strawberry festival started as an experiment after the Local Council did research and found that the strawberry fruit had been grown and sold in Mġarr since the fifteenth century, so we felt that we should start this -festival to promote the broad agriculture that this village offers,” explained the Mayor of Imġarr Paul Vella.

During this festival there will be several stalls selling both strawberries and various food products made from strawberry fruit. There will also be local artists and professional chefs cooking recipes with strawberries.

Sixteen-year-old Nicole Muscat, daughter of farmers from Mġarr who grow strawberries, said that on the day of the festival it would be gratifying for us farmers to see people enjoying our product and giving us the courage to we continue to work and continue to produce local products.

The Parliamentary Secretary encouraged the Maltese and Gozitan people to accept the call of the Local Council and attend this party in order to continue to strengthen the socio-cultural aspect in our communities.
