On the invitation of Anġlu Farrugia, Speaker of the House of Representatives of Malta, the Ceann Comhairle of the Republic of Ireland, Sean O’Fearghail, paid an official visit to Malta on 18th to 21st March, 2023.
During the meeting between the respective Parliamentary delegations, Dr Anġlu Farrugia stated that his visit in September 2022 to Ireland, and the recent visit of the President of Malta is a testament of the warm and cordial relations that exist between both countries. The Speaker expressed his heartfelt thanks to Ireland for the sharing of good practices with regard to Malta’s successful United Nations Security Council bid for 2023-2024, and looks forward to the continuing of enhanced relations with Ireland.
Both delegations recognised that Malta and Ireland share a natural and special bond in respect of culture and history together with common values and beliefs. These elements have been instrumental to bring Malta and Ireland together enabling them to speak with one voice on several issues at the international level and on the EU agenda.
Later, the Irish Parliamentary delegation accompanied by Speaker Anġlu Farrugia paid a courtesy visit to the President of the Republic of Malta, Dr George Vella, whilst a meeting between the Malta – Ireland Parliamentary Friendship Group will be held later this afternoon.
Ceann Comhairle of the Republic of Ireland Sean O’ Fearghail was accompanied by Senator Ronan Mullen, Mr Padraig O’Sullivan TD, Ms. Kathleen Funchion TD and other officials from the Irish Parliament. Ms Caroline Whelan, the Ambassador of Ireland to Malta, accompanied the delegation throughout the visit in Malta.
Speaker Anġlu Farrugia was accompanied by Clerk of the House Mr Ray Scicluna, Director of International Affairs Ms Eleanor Scerri, Director of Building Facilities Mr Peter-Paul Mallia, Advisor of International Affairs Ambassador Joseph Cole and the Speaker’s Private Secretary Mr Ancel Farrugia Migneco.
