The life and death of the national poet Dun Karm Psaila remembered 

October is linked to the birth and death of the national poet Dun Karm, who was born in Đaz-Zebbuġ on 18 October 1871 and died in San Điljan on 13 October 1961.

The Minister for National Heritage, Arts, and Local Government Owen Bonnici, together with representatives of the National Holidays Committee, the Maltese Academy and other organizations, greeted the national poet with a ceremony placing flowers on the poet’s memorial in Floriana.

During the ceremony, the Maltese anthem was also played which this year marks its centenary.

“The national poet Dun Karm was an important force for Malta from a nation to become a nation, not only through the use of the Maltese language but also for the strong messages he used to convey. Thanks to the national poet, we as a people expressed in the best way our ambition for our identity,” said Minister Owen Bonnici.

The Maltese anthem was also commemorated on 13 October 2022 where Festivals Malta, through the National Festivals Committee, together with the Maltese Academy, commemorated the national poet through a commemorative evening which was staged under the auspices of -President of Malta George Vella, with the theme ‘The Maltese Anthem – 100 years’, at the Sant’Anton Palace, Attard.

This evening will be broadcast on the Facebook page of Festivals Malta and that of the Maltese Academy on Monday 17 October 2022 at 8:30pm.
