Cabinet ‘Government with the people’: Prime Minister Robert Abela announces the expansion of Scheme 9 – another election promise that has been fulfilled

Prime Minister Robert Abela announced that from this school year, Scheme 9 will be expanded according to the need and around 2,000 students who benefit from this scheme will be helped more.

The Prime Minister announced this during a meeting of the Cabinet ‘Govern man-nies’, which convened at the secondary school of Đad-Dingli, College San Nikola and which discussed the theme of education.

The Prime Minister explained that until today a student can take up to one of the aids offered under this scheme. During this school year itself, this scheme will be expanded so that, depending on the need, more than one aid can be given. For example, if a student needs all the aids, he will be able to benefit from all the aid offered under Scheme 9. A scheme that offers aids such as a uniform, free photocopies, stationery and lunch. With the implementation of this measure these students will now be able to get all the aids, according to their needs.

In the presence of many parties involved in the education sector, including educators from public, church and independent schools, students, union representatives and academics, the Prime Minister Robert Abela mentioned that in the education sector we must not allow any boy or girl to fall behind.

Dr. Abela stressed that the country wants to see all children succeed in academic subjects and different vocations according to their skills and inclinations. Here he mentioned the investment in so many educational facilities to reach everyone’s talents.

The Prime Minister mentioned the increase in investment also in students where for this school and academic year, the Government is spending one million euros more in stipends for a total of €33 million.

This is apart from other expenses on services such as breakfast club, and free transport for all students.

The Prime Minister spoke about how the start of a new school year with complete normality after the pandemic was one that went smoothly, and stressed that this is an exciting time for the education sector. Here he talked about another important phase that we are entering into in the education sector.

 

Prime Minister Abela mentioned that in this new phase we want to discuss better conditions and amazing opportunities with the educators while we want to give the students new tools.

This is so that in this new phase we can see that we get better results in the educational sector and where the best opportunities that are created in the economy are taken by Maltese and Gozitan children.

Before the Cabinet meeting, which convened in the community, the Prime Minister Robert Abela, accompanied by the Minister for Education, Sport, Youth, Research and Innovation Clifton Grima and school and college administration, visited a number of classrooms and met many students and educators going along with the educational journey.
