Afghanistan earthquake: More than 1,000 dead

More than 1,000 people, including children, are believed to have died when an earthquake struck in the centre of Afghanistan on Wednesday.

Authorities say that heavy rains, poor resources and difficult terrain is hampering rescue operations.

The earthquake, measuring 6.1 on the Richter Scale, destroyed mud-built homes burying unknown numbers of people.

The United Nations is among rescue organisations rushing to bring food and medical supplies to the region.
