At a press conference, three schemes aimed at farmers and ranchers were launched. These schemes amount to € 6.5 million and are funded by European funds. Their aim is to reduce the burden on farmers and ranchers; attracting more young people with new incentives for them to enter the agricultural sector; as well as to make this sector more resilient and competitive and help farmers diversify in their products.
Minister Silvio Schembri said, “We are here in a field of a family that has already benefited from European funds, and through which it has been able to make a difference to make its work and products more sustainable. The Gauci family, among others, has developed an irrigation system, solar panels and a system to produce other products from the products it grows. This family is a clear example of the benefits that farmers and ranchers can have. ”
Minister Schembri urged farmers and farmers to use these funds to promote the Maltese product and to help the Maltese economy continue to flourish.
He also recalled the practical help that the government is giving among them through the Kordin Grain Terminal, where local importers are having a bigger space where they can store to buy large quantities of grain and wheat to keep as much as possible the stable prices.
Minister Anton Refalo said that the measures from the European Rural Development Program have served and will continue to serve as financial assistance for Gozitan and Maltese farmers and pastoralists. He listed that, “All this continues to clearly show the will of the government and the great efforts that are being made to continue to ensure that this sector and those who work in it are not negatively impacted by the effects of pandemic and the war in Ukraine. ”
Parliamentary Secretary Chris Bonett said the government was allocating € 6.5 million on three schemes from the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development to further help farmers continue to invest, diversify and create new opportunities for young farmers.
“This government has always invested in the agricultural sector and has always helped farmers to do important work to bring fresh local produce to our homes every day. Therefore, we are committed to continuing to assist farmers through European funds to continue investing in them, ”said Dr Bonett. He encouraged farmers to come forward and apply for European funding from Monday.
