Brexit: EU to reduce Northern Ireland border checks on British goods

In a bid to soothe the row about trade in Northern Ireland, the EU is expected to reduce the number of checks on goods and medicines entering the province.

At the beginning of this year the Northern Ireland Protocol was introduced to help prevent checks along the border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.

The Protocul means keeping Northern Ireland in the EU’s single market for goods but has led to concern for Unionists in the province and has posed problems for people and business in Northern Ireland.

European Commission Vice-President Maros Šefčovič said the new proposals for the protocol would be “very far-reaching ” and he hoped they would be seen as such.
