Italian national carrier Alitalia announced Tuesday, 24 August that it would stop issuing tickets and will effectively shut down operations as it prepares to dissolve and be replaced by a new airline. The new carrier, Italia Transporto Aereo (ITA), plans to begin operations on 15 October 2021, according to the airline.
ITA will inherit some of Alitalia’s aircraft, staff and assets such as airport lounges – but not Alitalia’s frequent flyer program, which will be abandoned in favour of an all-new loyalty scheme to be run by a third party.
