Vocational training to provide difficult news related to a child or baby condition

The Ministry for Solidarity and Social Justice, the Family and the Rights of the Child together with the Ministry for Inclusion and Quality of Life, have teamed up to address a sensitive and hitherto scarce sector.

This is the subject concerning complications in pregnancy or at an early stage in the development of the baby. During this conference it was announced that professional training will be given to all those who have to give difficult news to parents or even to those directly affected. The specialized training will be spread over 12 sessions where they will be given by the Positive Parenting Task Force, the Association of Midwives and Pediatricians and the Department of Disability at the University of Malta.

Often, doctors, pediatricians and other health care workers are the frontliners who have to deliver this difficult news to parents. This is in a period related to the birth of a baby, which is considered to be one of the most life-giving episodes of life that brings joy, love and togetherness to that family that is expecting a child.

These details were announced during a conference by Minister Michael Falzon and Minister Julia Farrugia Portelli who all stressed the importance of better addressing this sector in the best interest of those who are going through this difficult time as also for professionals who frequently encounter such cases.

Minister Michael Falzon said that this initiative is another ‘first’ in Malta, and promised that he will be investing more resources in order to provide professional training to all those who have to give difficult news to parents or even those directly affected.

Minister Julia Farrugia Portelli stressed that this is a training program that addresses the most difficult moments in the life and career of our professionals and frontliners. They are our intermediaries in a delicate moment to which there are connected lives that with courage and challenges will require continuity and a strong will.

Minister Farrugia Portelli explained how every health and care professional knows that throughout his career he will have those moments when he will need to show his sensitivity, love and acumen in the face of realities. delicate and often harsh life. It is that moment in which his professionalism and the dignity of the patient and his loved ones must be united to pave a valuable path and that even strengthens the heart for the future. It is also the point where the family is given references to support and services offered in connection with that particular condition.
