This project alone is employing about 100 people
During a visit of the latest works to open more new lanes between Ta’ Qali and Ħ’Attard in the coming days as part of the Central Link project, Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Capital Projects Ian Borg announced that this project alone is employing about 100 people.
Minister Ian Borg said, “It is through the merit and ability of every worker to make projects like the Central Link, as we saw recently at the inauguration of Marsa Junction, a reality. It is worth mentioning that at a time when the world was facing a pandemic, the Maltese worker found a government to support him. The heart of a social government kept beating for the hardworking Maltese workers and their families. And whereas on one hand it is appropriate to mention the advantages and benefits in terms of sustainability that Central Link will be giving to more than 30,000 people who use this route daily through 50% less travel time and 66% less emissions but how much more appropriate it is to mention other facts such as the fact that the infrastructure sector was one that continued to contribute both to the Maltese economy and on a more humane level that continuously offered jobs to thousands of Maltese workers.”
With an investment of €55 million, the Central Link project will be halving travel time by rebuilding 13 junctions, removing four traffic light systems and adding more than seven kilometers in new lanes along this 4.3-kilometer route. The project will also introduce various facilities for alternative means of transport, including more than 10 kilometers of pavements and safe walkways, better facilities for bus travelers as well as the longest lane for bicycle users. During the course of the project, Infrastructure Malta will also develop more than 24,000 square meters in new areas embellished with trees and plants.
Workers are currently paving the new lanes leading to the roundabout at the beginning of Saqqajja Hill. Several other new lanes where Monte Carmeli Hospital is located were just completed with asphalt last week and have already started to be used.
With effect from two days ago, the southbound lanes in the area of Ħemsija, between Triq il-Buqana, l-Imtarfa and Triq l-Imdina, were also closed to be rebuilt. Following the completion of Triq Ħ’Attard, Infrastructure Malta contractors are also currently rebuilding Triq iż-Żagħfran and Triq in-Nutar Zarb. Along these roads, the agency is also strengthening the underground systems for distributing services to local homes, while building new sidewalks with more accessibility, among other new facilities.
