New social housing stock converted from a dilapidated building

The Ministry for Social Accommodation has announced that work has been completed on previously abandoned property in Valletta, which will be used for social housing once it is revitalised.

This was announced by Minister Roderick Galdes during an on-site visit, accompanied by CEO of the Social Projects Management Ltd Patrick Vella.

He explained how in the face of the demand for social and affordable housing, the government is using every means and exploring every alternative to increase its stock of public housing, after several years in which the construction of housing projects was halted by previous administrations.

“We are building 1,700 new units, renting private apartments, but we have also identified abandoned buildings and turned a challenge into an opportunity. This building in the heart of Valletta has been closed and abandoned for many years. It will soon be the new home of two vulnerable families who are in need of social assistance,” said Minister Roderick Galdes.

Work began in September 2020, with structural work, new mechanical and electrical services, installation of doors and openings, and finishing work. All this work, at a cost of €132,000, has made the building habitable by today’s standards.

Social Projects Management Ltd CEO Patrick Vella stated that, due to the buildings’ location in Republic Street, restoration work also had to be carried out, with particular attention being given to the architectural heritage in order to respect the permit specifications issued for this building. Where possible, many original aspects of the building have been preserved, including the balcony and traditional Maltese tiles.
