On International Women’s Day, the wife of Prime Minister Dr Lydia Abela visited the Department of Civil Protection, the airline Air Malta, and the company Raesch Quarz and met a number of female employees who offer everything they know in service to their country and society.
During her visit to the Department of Civil Protection in Ħal Far, Dr Abela met Leanne Newell, Mandy Briguglio and Dorothy Sammut who are the only three female firefighters within the department. These are three employees who have been offering their service since 2019, years of service during which they stated that they did not allow any stereotypes to hinder their aspirations.
Dr Lydia Abela expressed her appreciation for the hard work carried out by the Department of Civil Protection, in particular the courage and determination of the three female firefighters who today have a career that has historically always been dominated by men.
During her visit to Air Malta, Dr Lydia Abela met with Charmaine St John who is a pilot and Maria Mifsud who is part of the cabin crew. Both women expressed their satisfaction that they are working in an environment that promotes equality and believes in the skills of employees regardless of their gender.
The Prime Minister’s wife also visited the German company Raesch Quarz, which opened its doors in our country in 1997 – a company that manufactures glass products and employs 45 people.
Managing Director Marisa Xuereb explained that 20 of these employees are women. Women some of whom play a role in running the company, as 50% of the administration is made up of women.
Dr. Lydia Abela had words of praise for the sense of equality that reigns in this company. She also expressed her satisfaction to see female employees in skilled jobs, who for many years were only associated with men.
She concluded by saying that we should live and celebrate such stories all year round as it is only in this way that we come to an increasingly equal society.
