€ 105,000 investment for new basketball court

Parliamentary Secretary for Sport, Recreation and Voluntary Organizations Clifton Grima, along with Pembroke Local Council Mayor Dean Hili and SportMalta Chief Executive Mark Cutajar, inaugurated a basketball pitch in Garden 4 July with a total investment of around € 105,000 by SportMalta and the Pembroke Local Council.

In addition to renovating the surrounding garden, the investment includes renovating the basketball pitch where the floor was painted, fencing was changed, new lighting was installed and basketball equipment was also installed.

In his speech, Parliamentary Secretary Clifton Grima stressed that with this investment many families will benefit from this open space that has been abandoned for the last few years. While thanking SportMalta and the Pembroke Local Council for the valuable work, he stressed that SportMalta is in the process of assessing different sites around Malta and Gozo to transform them into sports facilities that will serve as recreation for the whole family.

“These facilities will be rebuilt or renovated with their potential to bring communities closer together where there is room for more social interaction,” added Parliamentary Secretary Grima.

SportMalta Chief Executive Mark Cutajar said that one of SportMalta’s main goals is to encourage children and young people to practice sports and physical activity outdoors. That is why SportMalta has invested € 600,000 to identify playing fields and open spaces for sports use in open spaces, together with local councils.
