Police do not need PM’s permission to obtain mobile data as claimed in Sunday Times

Referring to a report in The Sunday Times yesterday in connection with an ongoing investigation conducted by the Department of Financial Investigations, the Police Force clarifies that the report includes incorrect assertions.

It is not true that the police need any authorization from the Prime Minister to either obtain or analyze mobile phone and other technological devices. The Police investigation referred to it in this report has been running smoothly, with the participation of a magistrate.

Claims made in relation to tax law do not relate to those indicated in parts of the report.
