Lydia Abela, the wife of the Prime Minister, presented a donation of € 20,000 to the University of Malta.

With these funds, the Faculty for the Strengthening of Society within the University of Malta will conduct research to understand factually and with scientific evidence why perpetrators and  aggressors behave and perform abuse, including physical, sexual, emotional or mental abuse.

Dr Abela said that with this research she would like to draw up a draft strategy to be announced next year in order to assess and see the effectiveness of the services being provided to those individuals who are pursuing rehabilitation programs.

Dr Lydia Abela said that during the sixteen days of activism on domestic violence, she made an effort to meet with all those involved in this field including the victims themselves and their children, academics, policy makers. and non-governmental organizations. She also visited a home for victims of domestic violence and also met with police who provide first aid to victims of domestic violence.

Dr Abela said that everyone who works in this sector is doing a very valuable job, however she said that as a country there is still a lot of work to be done to eliminate this social scourge.
