Launching of the 17th edition of the L-Istrina BOV Piggy Bank Campaign

The 17th edition of the L-Istrina BOV Piggy Bank Campaign was launched in aid of The Malta Community Chest Fund Foundation (MCCFF).

Present for launch along with President George Vella were Mrs Miriam Vella, Permanent Secretary within the Ministry for Education Mr Frank Fabri, and BOV Public Relations Executive Mr Charles Azzopardi.

This year’s edition will introduce a change to the traditional plastic piggy banks as these were changed to piggy banks made from recycled material and which, in turn, reduces the negative impact on the environment. The three new piggy banks feature drawings from three winners of a competition organised for this purpose and which attracted the participation of 91 children during the first phase of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The guiding theme given to the children for the drawings was ‘Support’, due to the current circumstances of the COVID-19 pandemic. The participants were between 4 and 13 years old.

Although this year Mrs Miriam Vella will not be visiting schools as she did last year due to the circumstances brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, she will still be delivering a virtual message to all students.

In a speech on the occasion, President George Vella thanked everyone involved in this annual event. He explained how this year is a very difficult one for the MCCFF which, like other organisations, had to cancel a number of activities that normally took place, including Rockestra and the Fun Run.

The President encouraged students, together with their schoolteachers, to contribute to the L-Istrina BOV Piggy Bank Campaign which will help to instill a sense of altruism and solidarity among students and unite together for a noble goal of raising funds in aid of the MCCFF.

Mr Charles Azzopardi, on behalf of BOV, explained how this year’s BOV Piggy Bank campaign will be a challenging one as schools are operating differently, with some students following online lessons. This is in addition to the regulations and recommendations of the health authorities that must be followed. Mr Azzopardi appealed to all students to contribute a small donation which, when added to that of many others, could mean a substantial sum for those in need.
