Work is underway at the Gzira Health Center to make this building more accessible, modern and, above all, to offer more services to the residents of the nine surrounding localities.
During a site visit, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Health Chris Fearne explained how, once the project is completed, in March next year, the Gzira Health Center will be offering twenty-seven services to the community. Therefore, this project will continue to implement the Government’s policy of getting the patient back to health as soon as possible and bacj in the community instead of resorting to Mater Dei when it is not needed.
He recalled how the Gzira Center is one of eight health centers and fifty-four clinics in the community that are being renovated or rebuilt around Malta and Gozo.
The works, which are managed by the Foundation for Medical Services, are being carried out with an investment of € 1.2 million from funds from the National Fund for Social Development.
FMS Chief Executive Carmen Ciantar explained how services have currently been removed on all floors and structural amendments are also being made in line with the new design. Works include tile, cladding and partition work, installation of a new electrical system, waterproofing, new soffits, facade renovation and installation of a lift, generator, and new X-ray machine.
It is estimated that the Gzira Health Center serves over seventy thousand people, so much so that in 2019 the center had around 122,000 appointments, a number that is expected to increase when the doors reopen next year.
