Dr Victoria Buttigieg has been chosen as the new Attorney General of Malta after the former Attorney General, Dr Peter Grech, resigned from the post he has held for the past decade.
This is the first time that a new Attorney General is being appointed after the separation of the same office back last December, when the same Dr Buttigieg was chosen as the first Attorney of the State of the country.
The new Advocate General is being appointed following a public call and has been selected by an independent Appointment Commission composed of three retired judges. The Prime Minister Robert Abela received the recommendation from the Commission and as it was accepted, the Prime Minister informed the President of Malta to make the appointment.
Dr. Buttigieg will be leaving her position as State Attorney, a position she held for the first time in December 2019, to become the first female Attorney General of Malta.
Dr Victoria Buttigieg, 43, graduated in Law from the University of Malta in 2001. She continued her studies where she graduated with a Masters in Financial Services.
In 2007, she started working with the Attorney General’s Office, where after gaining the necessary experience, she was appointed Assistant Attorney General. Here she worked in a number of different areas of litigation, including civil, administrative, and constitutional law, where she has also represented the government at a number of international meetings and committees. She has also contributed to various law reform projects.
The election of Dr Buttigieg as Advocate General of Malta was announced today, on the last day of Dr Peter Grech in office. The Maltese government, while thanking Dr Peter Grech for his service over the last ten years, wishes Dr Victoria Buttigieg every success in this post.
