The Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Animal Rights Anton Refalo paid a visit to Marsaxlokk Square and attended mass, followed by the traditional celebration of the blessing of boats and vessels to bring encouraging fishermen to have a good season in catching lampuki.
The mass and the celebration were led by the Archpriest of Marsaxlokk, Fr Luke Seguna.
The government has provided over 15,000 palm leaves to lampuki fishermen that have been distributed for free in recent days as aid.
In Malta and Gozo there are 122 fishermen registered for lampuki fishing.
The lampuki season begins on August 15 and runs until the end of the year. At present, boats and vessels are loaded with trellis as well as stones, palm and ropes so that together they come out and lift the ropes according to the positions provided to them by the Department of Fisheries and Fisheries. -Aquaculture.
Minister Anton Refalo said that these traditions are linked to our culture and identity. This August, both families and restaurant entrepreneurs will be waiting to taste and serve the lampuki for the first time. The work of the Maltese fisherman should be greatly appreciated, not only during this season, but throughout the year.
