Destinazzjoni Wied iż-Żurrieq, an open weekend by the Malta Tourism Authority during the last weekend, was hugely successful having attracted thousands of people.
It is estimated that around 2,500 people made use of the free shuttle bus service, which was instrumental to mitigate traffic and parking issues. During Saturday and Sunday hundreds more visited Wied iż-Żurrieq using other means of transport. The activities during the open weekend were enjoyed also by several tourists who took the opportunity to visit this Mediterranean gem.
Activities included around 2,000 boat trips to Blue Grotto. The programme was varied and aimed towards the whole family and consisted of games for children, cultural activities including visits to Xutu Tower, InGuardia reenactments and appeareances by both Qrendi band clubs.
Minister for Tourism and Consumer Protection Julia Farrugia Portelli expressed her satisfaction on the success of this event and stated that “we reached our aim to offer a relaxing weekend in a beautiful environment. I would like to thank the Malta Tourism Authority for their success in this event which has filled us with optimism in organising other activities on this scale which help to strengthen our tourism industry in this part of Malta.”
The public is informed that the shuttle bus service to Wied iż-Żurrieq is offered between Thursdays and Sundays from 10am to midnight, every 20 minutes. Two buses marked ‘Destinazzjoni Wied iż-Żurrieq’ pick passengers from San Niklaw/Il-Qasam in the limits of Siġġiewi and the main squares of Qrendi and Żurrieq. Parking spaces have been created in San Niklaw for those who choose to leave their vehicle there to avoid the parking issue in Wied iż-Żurrieq.
