Regarding the negotiations between the European Union and the United Kingdom, Prime Minister Robert Abela explained that at the beginning of the meeting, the European leaders were given an update of the ongoing discussions between the main negotiator of the European Union Michel Barnier and the UK side.
He said that although Michel Barnier is positive that by the end of the year we will have an agreement on Brexit, so far there is more uncertainty than certainty.
Dr Abela said the conclusion was that while leaders will continue to work to reach an agreement, it must not be one that can be reached at all costs and added that either a good agreement for the EU is reached or no agreement will be reached.
“We as a Government have anticipated this step because we are working hard to have all the arrangements in place for the eventuality that this agreement will not be reached by the end of the year. We are always thinking of evil so that good does not diminish. We have prepared for every scenario so that if there is no agreement or if there is a transition period we will see that we have everything in place by 31 December “, said the Prime Minister.
He concluded by saying that if there is no agreement it will have an impact on the sectors involved and therefore the Government is working so that if that eventuality happens we will move to next year with all the preparations in place.
